Welcome to Running With Coach G

Hello Everyone!

As most of you know, I am starting a running charity group to raise money for the Female Athlete Triad Coalition, a 501 (c) 3 international charity group of researchers focusing on women's athletic health and trying to answer many questions about women's athletic nutrition and training.  The group will be nicknamed "FAT (Female Athlete Triad) Chicks".  If you would still like to run for the Coalition and you find the FAT Chicks name offensive, please register for a jersey that has just the coalition logo, once I have the registration information available.

Any runner no matter what shape or size can deal with the triad.  The triad includes a negative energy balance, amenorrhea and/or menstrual disturbances and bone loss and/or premature osteoporosis.  When a female athlete is dealing with the triad or has characteristics of one or more parts, they are not consuming enough of something to help their body recover from the intensity of the exercise they are doing.  Because women have learned how to push themselves beyond their physical limits, in the women's athletics movement, many women have dealt with multiple parts of the triad in their quest to become the best athlete they can be.  If you are a runner and you have been for at least a year and you hang out with other runners, probably at least one of your female running friends has had to take time off because of a stress fracture or another running-related injury.

If you want more information about the Female Athlete Triad, please visit:

As a runner, I have learned that it is much easier to plan time off, rather than being forced to take time off because of an injury.  Last spring, I broke my pinky toe and I was not able to run for three weeks and it was tough to get through mentally that I could not run to deal with stress and just burn off extra energy.  So this winter, I planned in a three week break from high intensity training which includes reduced running and more cross training and more weight lifting through the end of December to take advantage of the holiday season.  I am hoping to gain a few pounds of muscle and extra nutrients to sustain me through spring half marathon training which I want to be doing with all of you!

The first event for FAT Chicks will be the Great Bay Half Marathon and 5k on Saturday, April 7th in Newmarket, NH.  While I am working with the design expert on the logo and the jersey, you can sign up for either of these races to make sure you have a spot.  They are run by Loco Sports, a great New England race company, that has race organization down to a T.  Once you sign up for these races, and if you would like to sport a FAT Chicks jersey, please download and mail the PDF registration for a lifetime FAT Chick membership.  I will place the final order on March 15th so please send me your information prior to that date.  If you want to get the best price to register for these races, do so prior to December 31st, 2011!

If you would like to register for the Great Bay Half Marathon or 5K, please go to the following page, read about the race, and determine which race is best for you.

If you are planning to run either of these races, there will be two ways that you can have your entry paid for:
1) Be the fastest registered FAT Chick in the half marathon or 5K
a) There will be a sponsored Elite male and female FAT Chick in both races
2) Have the highest fundraising total for the Coalition
a) There will be a sponsored Everyday male and female FAT Chick in both races

For both of these races, there will be 12-week training programs available for a $40 with group runs meeting twice a week for all ability levels.  There will also be private coaching available for those who want to have a more specialized program.  Please contact me directly at coachg.fatchicks@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Happy Running!

Heidi
